Is This The Beginning Of The “big October Surprise”?

Obama awarded Illinois grants to relative’s grouphttp://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081007/ap_o…
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – As a state senator, Democrat Barack Obama awarded $75,000 in government grants to a Chicago social service organization led by a rabbi who is also his wife’s cousin, records show.

In 1999, Obama arranged for $50,000 for adult literacy and counseling services offered on Chicago’s South Side by a group called Blue Gargoyle. A $25,000 grant for the group’s youth services followed the next year.
The group’s executive director when the grants were awarded was Capers Funnye, a South Side rabbi and Michelle Obama’s first cousin once removed.
Funnye (pronounced fun-NAY) said Monday there was nothing improper about the way Blue Gargoyle obtained the grants. Obama did not encourage him to apply for the money, he said, and Funnye denied using family connections to pressure Obama to approve the application.
Obama’s presidential campaign said the grants supported valuable services.
“State Sen. Obama joined other legislators in securing funding for a well-established social services agency in his district that provided job training, employment counseling, and alternative education programs to approximately 1,200 Chicago residents each year,” campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said.
Funnye noted that Blue Gargoyle got similar grants from another state legislator who had no family ties to the group.
“There was nothing funny, nothing below board,” Funnye said. “Everything was done according to whatever guidelines the state of Illinois had in place.”
But guidelines were practically nonexistent.
At the time, Illinois legislators were handing out hundreds of millions of dollars in grants. The money was part of a deal that legislative leaders cut with the governor to approve a major public-works program.
Each legislator could award money to favored groups and projects with basically no oversight. The grants were known as “member initiatives” and were similar to the congressional “earmarks” often criticized in Obama’s presidential campaign against Republican John McCain.
Obama awarded about $6 million for everything from literacy programs and park improvements to drill team uniforms and jazz appreciation events.
Founded in 1968, Blue Gargoyle provides job training and placement, tutoring, counseling and an alternative high school for dropouts. It’s name refers to gargoyles on buildings at the University of Chicago, where the founders started their charitable work, Funnye said.
Funnye said he was executive director from late 1997 until summer 2002. Obama would have been familiar with the organization’s work even before his wife’s cousin took over, he added.

Obama taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School for twelve years, being first classified as a Lecturer from 1992 to 1996, and then as a Senior Lecturer from 1996 to 2004.[32] He also joined Davis, Miner, Barnhill & Galland, a twelve-attorney law firm specializing in civil rights litigation and neighborhood economic development, where he was an associate for three years from 1993 to 1996.
In 1996, Obama was elected to the Illinois Senatesucceeding State Senator Alice Palmer as Senator from Illinois’ 13th District, which then spanned Chicago South Side neighborhoods from Hyde Park-Kenwood south to South Shore and west to Chicago Lawn.[36] Once elected, Obama gained bipartisan support for legislation reforming ethics and health care laws. On February 10, 2007, Obama announced his candidacy for President of the United States in front of the Old State Capitol building in Springfield, Illinois.
Obama met his wife, Michelle Robinson, in June 1989, when he was employed as a summer associate at the Chicago law firm of Sidley Austin.[159] Assigned for three months as Obama’s adviser at the firm, Robinson joined him at group social functions, but declined his initial offers to date.[160] They began dating later that summer, became engaged in 1991, and were married on October 3, 1992.[161] The couple’s first daughter, Malia Ann, was born in 1998,[162] followed by a second daughter, Natasha (“Sasha”), in 2001.
On November 4, 2008, Barack Obama defeated John McCain in the general election and became the first African American to be elected President of the United States.[117][118][119][120] In his victory speech, delivered before a crowd of hundreds of thousands of his supporters in Grant Park in Chicago, Obama proclaimed that “change has come to America.”[121] Born in Hawaii, Obama will be the first U.S. President born outside the contiguous United States. He also will be fifth youngest President at a date of accession, and the first since Lincoln whose primary political base is Illinois.

A Phone Number For Someone Living In Saudi Arabia?

I am needing a phone number, or to locate rather someone living in Saudi Arabia. Here is my situation. I am looking for my father his name is Abdullah Moffreh Shahri. He went to the University of Illinois at Springfield from the Spring of 1980-Spring of 1982. He graduated with a bachelors in Criminal Justice with a concentration on Law Enforcement. He was born in 1953, so he is 56 now. I am desperately trying to find him, and was hoping if anyone knew a way to look him up or the best way to find someone in Saudi Arabia. I would greatly appreciate any help. I have contacted the Saudi Arabian Embassy, and have been waiting for their response, I am not sure what results will come about from this.
Thank you all for taking the time to read my request.

Grad School? Maybe? I Hope So. Yes.?

What do you think my chances are of getting into the following USA graduate schools:
I spent six years as an undergraduate. I eventually earned a four year college degree.
1st Year at College: 1.68 GPA and failed one course.
2nd Year at College: GPA 3.3, CGPA 2.39
1st Year – 4th Year at College (Different College, New Program): CGPA 3.8
No GRE is required.
My university choices are: Roosevelt University, University of Illinois at Springfield, Point Park University.

Either Cs Program From A Regular College Or Unpopular Program From A Famous College?

Is a CS (master degree) program of a 3 tier college better (more useful) than aunpopular major offered by a top college? I have heard that foreigners (even including Americans) who got degrees in unpopular programs from good schools(like Hardvard and others) could not survive in the US and these foreigners ended up going back to their home countries. Because I will either choose UIS’s (university of Illinois at Springfield) CS Program or UIUC’s Human resource development. My uncle told me dont care about the school’s name ,and CS program is much more helpful for me. I am already an US citizen but my family is in China. I am looking forward to working in the US. I know life is even tougher for foreigners in the US. anybody, please give me some advice.

Should I Bother Applying To A College If I Don’t Meet The Admission Requirements?

University of Illinois at Springfield has a requirements of three years of college preparatory mathematics, selected from Algebra, geometry, advanced Algebra, pre-calculus, trigonometry and calculus.
I passed the first semester of Algebra but failed the second, then I took Algebra A and Algebra B which is basically Algebra over two years. Now I’m in Geometry.
When I graduate, I guess i will have 2.5 years of math, but if I may say so myself, i’m smart. I will have college credit from A.P. U.S. History, English, Psychology and Western Civil when I graduate.
Should I apply? Can they accept me on a contingency basis?

What Is An Affordable And Accredited Public University For Online Graduate Studies?

I am interested in getting a graduate degree from a public university online in either political science, international relations, criminal justice, homeland security or government studies. I am looking for a school that would offer affordable online tuition? Affordable to me is in the $300 a credit-hour range.
I am in Michigan and I need a out-of-state school that’s going to offer affordable out-of-state or E-tuition for online classes. E-tuition is lowered tuition for out-of-state students taking classes online.I have come to realize that a lot of schools are only affordable when it comes to in-state tuition.
So far I like Univ. of Illinois-Springfield (E-tuition)-but nothing I want to study besides the less appealing MPA program, Fort Hays State Univ. and California State University, Dominguez Hills.
Any help is appreciated!
